FURNITURE CARE

NPD Furniture Care Guide

Proper care helps preserve the appearance, comfort, and performance of your furniture. Always follow the product label or upholstery cleaning code when available.

Test any cleaning product in a hidden area first.

Fabric Upholstery

Care: Vacuum regularly with a soft upholstery attachment. Rotate and fluff removable cushions to promote even wear.

Spills: Blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub. Professional cleaning recommended

Avoid: Over-wetting, bleach, harsh chemicals, scrubbing, direct sunlight, and excessive heat.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather is a natural material. Variations in color, grain, texture, wrinkles, healed scars, and other markings are normal characteristics and are not considered defects.

Care: Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Vacuum seams using a soft brush attachment.

Spills: Blot immediately. If permitted by the product instructions, wipe gently with a lightly dampened cloth and dry promptly.

Avoid: Alcohol, bleach, household cleaners, saddle soap, oils, waxes, abrasive materials, direct sunlight, and heating or air-conditioning vents.

Use only leather cleaners or conditioners approved for the specific leather type.

Bonded Leather and Faux Leather

Bonded leather and faux leather have a coated surface that requires gentle cleaning. Their care requirements differ from those of genuine leather.

Care: Dust regularly with a soft microfiber cloth.

Cleaning: Wipe with a lightly dampened cloth. For additional cleaning, use a small amount of mild soap diluted in water, then wipe dry.

Avoid: Leather oils and conditioners, alcohol, solvents, bleach, abrasive cleaners, excessive moisture, direct sunlight, and heat.

Solid Wood Furniture

Natural wood may display variations in grain, color, knots, mineral streaks, and texture. Wood can also expand or contract slightly as indoor temperature and

humidity change.

Care: Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Use coasters, placemats, trivets, and felt pads. Lift objects instead of dragging them.

Cleaning: Wipe spills immediately. Use a lightly dampened cloth and dry promptly.

Avoid: Standing water, steam, abrasive cleaners, silicone-based sprays, direct sunlight, and placement near heating or air-conditioning vents.

Natural variations in grain, color, knots, and texture are normal.

Recommended Indoor Conditions

For general indoor use, maintain a relatively stable environment of approximately:

  • Temperature: 65°F–75°F (18°C–24°C)

  • Relative humidity: 40%–55%

Seasonal movement, small checks, and minor changes in natural wood may occur as the surrounding environment changes.

Wood Veneer and Engineered Wood

Wood veneers are thin layers of natural wood applied over a stable substrate. MDF, plywood, and other engineered wood products may be used beneath veneers, laminates, painted finishes, or decorative overlays.

Care: Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Protect surfaces with coasters, placemats, and felt pads.

Cleaning: Wipe with a lightly dampened cloth and dry immediately. Use mild soap only when necessary.

Avoid: Excessive moisture, steam cleaners, harsh chemicals, heat, and allowing water to enter joints or edges.

Sintered Stone

Sintered stone is a highly durable, low-porosity surface designed to resist everyday stains, moisture, heat, and scratching. However, proper care is still important to

protect the finish, edges, and overall appearance.

Care: Wipe regularly with a soft cloth. Use coasters, placemats, and trivets.

Cleaning: Use warm water and mild soap with a nonabrasive cloth or sponge. Dry thoroughly.

Avoid: Abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, waxes, sealers, direct cutting, heavy impact, and dragging objects across the surface.

Sintered stone is low-porosity and generally does not require sealing.

Natural Marble

Marble is a natural stone characterized by unique veining, color variation, mineral deposits, small fissures, and differences in texture. These natural

characteristics make every piece unique and are not considered defects. Marble is porous and sensitive to acidic substances. Prompt cleaning and proper surface protection are essential.

Marble is a natural stone. Variations in color, veining, texture, and mineral markings are normal.

Care: Use coasters, placemats, trivets, and felt pads. Wipe spills immediately.

Cleaning: Use a soft cloth with warm water or a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone. Dry promptly.

Avoid: Vinegar, lemon, citrus cleaners, bleach, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, direct cutting, and hot items placed directly on the surface.

Acidic liquids may cause permanent dull spots known as etching. Sealing may help resist stains but does not prevent etching.

Important Information About Marble

Acidic foods and beverages may cause etching, which can appear as a dull, light, or discolored area. Etching is a chemical reaction with the stone and is different

from a stain. Natural marble will develop a patina over time. Minor changes in sheen, surface markings, and signs of use are normal characteristics of natural stone.

For deep stains, chips, scratches, etching, or refinishing, consult a qualified natural-stone care professional.

Natural Rattan, Cane, and Woven Fibers

Natural rattan, cane, pandanus, seagrass, and similar plant-based materials may display variations in color, texture, thickness, and weave. These characteristics are

part of their natural beauty.

Care: Dust with a soft cloth or brush. Vacuum gently using low suction.

Cleaning: Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.

Avoid: Soaking, steam cleaning, harsh chemicals, direct sunlight, excessive heat, and extreme changes in temperature or humidity.

Natural variations in color, texture, and weave are normal.

For general indoor use, maintain a relatively stable environment of approximately:

  • Temperature: 65°F–75°F (18°C–24°C)

  • Relative humidity: 40%–55%

Plastic, Resin, and Molded Polyurethane

This section applies to hard plastic, resin, and molded polyurethane furniture components. It does not apply to polyurethane-coated faux-leather upholstery.

Care: Dust with a soft microfiber cloth.

Cleaning: Use mild soap and water with a nonabrasive cloth. Wipe clean and dry thoroughly.

Avoid: Abrasive pads, alcohol, acetone, bleach, solvents, acidic cleaners, excessive heat, and prolonged direct sunlight.
